Review courtesy of Hip Hop Dependency:

It’s been a while since inspiration and time collided to the point that I felt compelled to write an album review.   But as the music gods have it,  Asun Eastwood and producer MK Ortiz have crafted that inspiration in their album, Ask God For Help, and my time allows to showcase it.

Eastwood has a multitude of releases and projects, all of which are dope in their own right so what make this one special?  What sets it apart? Simply put, it’s evolution of an artist and a vibe that make this one hit different. When giving it a listen, it transports to you a place and just holds your attention there. And I honestly, had never heard of producer MK Ortiz before this instance, but his debut on these pages is more than impressive. It’s stellar. He gives each song enough consistency without becoming overly familiar. In the end, Ask God For Help, makes is irrefutable proof that this a great pairing.

To be clear. there are no weak tracks on this album. It’s cumulative strength. But we can’t talk about each track in depth so we are going to visit tracks, #3, #4, and #6. The heart of the album.

Leonard Nimoy hits you instantly with this guitar lick sample. In some ways it has a Pulp Fiction 70’s vibe. And in the intro Asun hits the nail on the head when he says…”let this music be your drug…” That really is a statement to remember as you continue your listen through the project. The rhymes and music take on this addictive quality. Our emcee combines talents with Smoovth and Falcon Outlaw as each take a turn elevating a sixteen to those higher levels.

Now my favorite track is Chequing Balancesfeaturing Shottie. This is where I really hear this evolution in music. Our emcees drop wisdom and food for thought over a melodic and glorious production from Ortiz. From the rhythm to the wordplay the song just feels like a teachable moment of acquired growth and perspective that grabs your attention.

There’s a difference to nuance,  a difference to hate / A compromise is risky…losing character traits / Compromise in self is a different escape / I’m talking diplomatic compromise for estates / If this over your head…shit…you might get it late / That’s on time for you that’s the balance of faith / But life is balance that’s all I’mma say

Listening to the joint, Debaucherous Diary, we have a cathartic release. Asun has something to get off of his chest and you are privy to every thought. MK Ortiz constructs my favorite beat of the project here. Sometimes a producer can just make a “song cry” and that’s what he does with this saxophone in the background, along with this spanish vocal sample. There’s a sadness spoken into this music, while our emcee gives life to these thoughts with a free form flow:

…we’re not perfect, we’re just searching for applause / we learning to earn it by serving our God / But murderers don’t purge, they curtailed by the law / surveiled every flaw / no bail if you caught / no witnesses or I’ll serve jail if they saw

There are no coincidences in greatness. Sometimes the audio alchemy has a destiny of it’s own and that’s what has transpired here on, Ask God For Help. An emcee in Asun Eastwood, who’s discography already hosts numerous gems, collaborated with a producer who I dare say most of us may not have known. But we certainly do now. We know now because their talents brought the best out of each other. These beats were meant for this artist, and his rhymes for these beats. The music and the prose is evolved. MK Ortiz gives us sounds that are familiar yet seem new at the same time. Meaning, I have heard the sounds, but not the composition. And that composition is perfect for Asun Eastwood. His words and phrases hit sharp, confident, and brighter than ever, furthering his reputation as an elite artist, and making this his current opus.
